No Time To Train? Take Exercise Breaks At Work

With the holidays coming up, many people are crunched for time. One thing that I used to do when I was not surfing the net or sleeping under my desk as a corporate slave at workJ was apply a concept that I learned from strength coach Pavel Tsatsouline called GTG (greasing the groove) and take exercise breaks every hour or two while I was at work (Hey, perhaps that is why I got laid off). I started off by doing one set of five repetitions on each of the following killer bodyweight exercises:

Now I had the luxury of having my own office in which I could simply shut the door for privacy (Imagine your boss walking by seeing you do handstand pushups). If you do not have an office, simply go outside of the building that you work in 3-5 times a day, find a private spot and get your exercise breaks in. Feel free to use one-arm pushups instead of handstand pushups if you do not have access to a wall. If you have a job such as a UPS driver or truck driver, just get an exercise break in whenever you take a break to have lunch, get gas, etc.

Regarding the optimal repetitions to do per set, use a rep scheme that is half off your all out max. In other words, if you can do twenty handstand pushups to failure, then execute one set of ten during each exercise break. Each week add one rep to each set and then test yourself again on your one set max every two-three weeks. You will be in for a pleasant surprise. In addition to keeping you in shape, you will find that each exercise snack gives you a nice mental lift and you will be more productive at work. In fact, I think that exercise breaks should be mandatory at work.

Studies show that the average American watches four hours of TV per day. What is really scary regarding that finding is that four hours is the average per day. That means that many Americans watch even more than four hours of TV per day. Imagine being someone that watches eight hours of TV per day! Yikes. Have no illusions about it, many people are addicted to watching TV and living vicariously through the artificial lives in the fictitious shows that they watch day after day. No wonder 1 in 50 Americans is 100lbe overweight! Moreover, the same people that complain about having no time are probably the same people that watch fours hours plus of TV per day. Is TV making you a better person or improving the quality of your life? I doubt it. In fact excessive TV watching is probably distracting you from finding ways to improve your life. I challenge you to give up TV viewing for ten days and then draw your own conclusions. That is right, no "Joe Millionaire" or "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy" for ten days. I know it is a hardship, but you can do it! My guess is that the only regret that you will have is that you did not unplug from the TV matrix sooner. While I do not have scientific evidence or any double blind studies to support the benefits of reduced TV watching, here is my guess on some of the possible benefits:
