It is amazing how much fear stops us from doing so much in life. Don't get me wrong, fear is a natural drive and it exists for a reason. It helps us from doing many things that will cause pain and suffering. Ironically, in many ways fear causes us to act in ways that will cause pain and suffering as well. I do not think that it is practical to eradicate fear. Yet, I do feel that fear needs to be managed and utilized. I am often fearful of public speaking like most other people. The funny thing is that this comes to a surprise to people that have seen me speak. Many people say that I look very calm and composed when I speak. The reason why I do, ironically is because of fear. You see, fear keeps me sharp and focused when I speak in front of a group. If I did not have some level of fear, I would probably get up and do a horrible job. Because of the fear, I get a feeling of exhilaration that keeps me in the moment where I need to be. However, this is due to the fact that I have learned how to manage fear and channel it. One way to handle fear is to focus on the outcome that you desire rather than on how you feel. Focus on the sense of accomplishment that comes with defying the odds and facing your fear. Next time you face an opportunity to address a fear, just take it. Don't sell yourself short and just focus on the feeling of accomplishment that you will have from facing a fear and the tremendous growth that will follow.

Want To Improve Your Military press? Flex Your Legs!

Many people email me and ask what they can do to improve their Military Press numbers. The first thing that I also ask these people is what can they squat. More often than not their leg strength is lacking. When you do a standing Military Press, you need a solid foundation to press off of. If you have weak spindly legs, then you are never going to reach your full potential in the Military Press. Start squatting and you will be amazed at how your Military Press numbers increase.

Another tip is to flex your legs as hard as possible when pressing. I have some shoulder stability issues in my left shoulder that used to cause me to lean in the opposite direction excessively when doing one-arm Military Presses with an 88lb kettlebell. Thus, my one-arm military press looked more like a side press. When I started flexing my legs as hard as possible, I was able to press off a much firmer foundation. As a result, I did not lean to the side excessively and the weight popped up effortlessly.

During your next Military Press workout, focus on keeping your body really tight and flex your legs as hard as possible. Let me know what happens. My guess is that you will have a much stronger press than ever before.
