1. AGGRESSIVE STRENGTH QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"A dog is not considered a good dog because he is a good barker. A man is not considered a good man because he is a good talker."
- The Buddha
Happy new year! 2007 is finally here and man did 2006 go by fast. That is the way life is. If you do not make changes today you never will and the years will keep passing by. I always tell people to take care of at least one major goal with in the first quarter of the year. If you pull that off, your confidence will sky rocket and the momentum you build will take you through the rest of the year. On the other hand, if you slack off in the first quarter of the year, you spend the rest of the year playing catch up and we all know how well that works. if you act as if there are only three months in 07 you will make things happen in the first quarter. Otherwise, it is all to easy to procrastinate.
One important thing to do at the beginning of the year or really any time is to take account of yourself. Why are you the person you are? Have you ever taken the time to look at yourself and ask why you live your life the way you do? How much of it is controlled by the opinions of others? People you know and do not know? How much of your life do you relinquish to factors that are not within your control? Do you feel like you are in charge of your life or do you simply live life reactively bouncing from one unexpected experience to another?
If you want to get better you have to get better as a person. You have to accept some brutal realities about yourself and take the steps to make necessary changes. No doubt this is not easy to do. People often do what is convenient rather than what is right. What a shame as we were not put on this earth to simply exist. The human brain and soul are both powerful mechanism that can make our dreams come true. The problem is we have to actually use both and many of do not want to think. We want to hope that someone knows something we do not and hope they save us. Certainly not an example of living life aggressively. Moreover, as Achilles states in the movie Troy, "That is why no one will remember your name."
I never give advice that I do not take personally so lets look at how my 2006 went. 2006 was a super transitional year for me. I made some major professional changes and personal changes as well. I moved to a new state and took my business in a different direction. I will be doing a lot of new stuff this year such as two Level 2 Advanced kettlebell workshops. Both workshops will be super tough and informative and limited to small groups.
My level 1 workshops always get 25-35 people and I want to work with some smaller groups on some more advanced stuff. 2007 may be the last year that I even do basic workshops as I want to teach stuff that I find more challenging. I have done over 70 beginner workshops and it is time for some advanced workshops. The market is finally ready for it. I cannot wait to teach my advanced seminars and both my NYC and Las Vegas advanced kettlebell workshops are both almost sold out! For more info, go to: Advanced Kettlebell Workshops.
Anyway, lets get back to last year. 2006 was a great year. However, it could have been a lot better. I did not work nearly as hard as I did in 2005. Frankly I got soft and wasted a lot of time. I had some emotional baggage that I had been carrying for too long and did not address it until the end of 2006. Thus, as a result I was depressed for a good chunk of 2006. What a waste of time that is! Fortunately, I got it together by the end of 2006. However, I could have had a much better year if I took the time to address it sooner instead of putting off the inevitable. Again, brutal honesty is very important for professional and personal growth. However, it is easier to lie to yourself and distract yourself with meaningless activities.
My strength training was kick ass for the first six month of 2006. I was really on a role. Then I hit a wall via the depression which manifested some physical symptoms as well. This really derailed my training. I was close to pressing two 105lb bells around May, 06 but did not pull it off. By the time I got myself together at the end of 2006 it was too late. Again, not the end of the world and more fire to nail that goal this year. I am working on some great new techniques for increasing pressing strength without increasing my bodyweight. Looking forward to teaching this stuff at my advanced workshops.
Business, started off really well for the first six months of 2006. Then I decided that it was time to leave the Dragondoor organization and my income tanked in September. I was low for October and November as well. I managed to get it together and ascertain a solution and December was one of the my best months for 2006. 2007 is off to an incredible start and I am excited about the rest of 07. I have it together mentally, physically, and emotionally and there is no stopping me. This will be a great year. I have an excellent company that is backing me up and I am excited to work with them further. I did end 06 on a good note by releasing a new e-book that I am very proud of. It is selling very well and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. You can read more about it at: The Aggressive Strength Solution For Size And Strength.
What I am most proud of from 06 is how great my relationship with my Carol is going. I had let the relationship get comfortable for a long time which is never good. I was too immersed in my own irrational thoughts and forgot about her. I will not let that happen again. Fortunately, we turned it around in December and things are going great. Life in other areas is always better when your personal life is great. Many claim that lame jobs and lame relationships provide anger to fuel great workouts. I do not buy it. Whatever benefit you may derive is short lived and you will eventually crash and burn hard. Stress kills your adrenals and literally kills you. Never underestimate the negative force of stress.
Now lets talk about 07. I plan on releasing three DVD's in 07. the first one will be on fat loss and mental toughness and it will be out in February. I am training my ass off right now to get ripped to shreds for the DVD. I am putting in six workouts per week and it is going great. I do not have any workshops until late Feb. Thus, I have plenty of time to train, rest, and basically create the ideal environment for training. My diet is locked in and I feel great. More on that in the training section of this issue.
I am also looking at producing some DVD's for other fitness professionals that I respect. One is already in the works and it is going to be incredible. It will be the ultimate DVD on bodyweight training and staying in shape on the road. I am also the executive producer for a new CD that Cro-mags legend Harley Flannagan is working on. It is going to rock and I cannot wait to get it to the marketplace.
As cliche as it sound, I hope that 07 is a great year for you. Unfortunately, it will probably not be much different than other year. Why would it be? For things to change, you have to change. For things to get better you have to get better. In order to get better, you have to take charge of your life and make the necessary sacrifices. People that are not prepared to make sacrifices will never be successful. You cannot have it all all of the time. However, you can eventually have it all, if you are play the game right.
As my friend Harley Flannagan states in a Cro-mags song, "The harder the battle, the sweeter is the victory." Battle hard in 07 and enjoy the spoils of war. Or feel free to watch me achieve my goals and wonder why you cannot do the same ;-) Only partially joking with you. Conquer yourself and 07 is yours. Lose the war within, and 07 will be just another year to mark off.

Here is what people are saying about my new e-book:
"Wow. Now that I have seen the book I can honestly say that I just ripped you off, Mike. This e-book is a compendium of some of the best
training methods all boiled down, with all of the nonsense filtered out and set forth in a way that even a training novice can understand.
I think that there are enough routines to keep anyone busy for AT LEAST 2 YEARS, maybe more. The sections on testosterone and estrogen and
how to get these hormones under control was worth the price of the e-book all by itself. Thanks again for an awesome product!"
- Nemiah VanGuilder
"You've done it again. I recently purchased your e-book, and it is full of useful information for serious trainees,
from beginner to advanced. Whether it is nutrition, endocrine advice/management or program design, the advice is sound, tested and presented in
a way in which there can be "no excuses". Way to go, Mike."
- Steve Strickman, RKC New York, NY
"Mike I just got done reading your latest book "The Aggressive Strength Solution for Size and Strength" and it was
time well spent over the holidays. You laid it all out when it comes to getting it done. Whether you have access to the best equipment in
the world or just your own bodyweight you spoon fed us with all the programs, methods, and principles imaginable to get the desired results.
I appreciate you reminding me of many great programs I had forgotten along with some new ones I can't wait to cycle into my training this
year. But cutting through the BS and giving us your take on how to get the most out of our training was the difference in this book. You
are a great motivator I found myself doing sets of heavy KB clean and presses as I read the chapters. If you can get me working out as I'm
reading I can only imagine what your live training clients get from you!"

8. AGGRESSIVE STRENGTH TRAINING TIP OF THE WEEK
Updates From Mahler Land
Damn! I am excited about 2007. This year is off to an incredible start in every sense of the word and by being brutally honest with myself I will stay the course. One of my training goals for 07 is to do a Double Clean and Press with two 105lb bells. Fortunately, I have some 97lb bells that Lifeline USA sent me. I need to press those first and I am close. Once I nail that, the 105s are mine. I would also like to pull off the press at my current bodyweight of 187.5. Scratch that, I am going to get down to 185 or slightly less in order to be super ripped for my next DVD on fat loss and mental toughness. This means, I will have to learn how to "sit back" like the old OL lifters did back in the day. I am working on this by doing lots of rack walks with heavy bells and lockout walks. Both are great full body exercises that help a great deal with overhead pressing as well. More on that on my next DVD.
My testosterone levels are through the roof right now. How do I know? Lets just say that one of my heads is rock hard several times a night and without fail every morning. Even when the day after a hard training session. It is amazing how emotional issues affect us and how dealing with them can make us feel better almost overnight I feel strong at every workout, my mood is great, and my sex drive is off the chain. Without a high sex drive you will never feel your best. I have experienced periods of having a low sex drive and I rather not ever experience that again as it is a miserable way to live. Successful people have high sex drives. Accept it and join the club.
While my energy and mood have been great, I noticed that my CNS was sluggish at a workout earlier this week. It was all too apparent on presses. My choices were to skip it or not be a wuss and push through. I took the latter choice and pushed through with my muscles. I actually got a great pump and it was a nice mental toughness session. I ended the workout with some heavy Double Swings that felt great. Not surprising as Double Swings are not a CNS drill and the fact that they felt great only confirms that my CNS was the limiting factor.
Right now I am training to my limit at least once a week. Sometimes two. Always living one rep in the bank is good most of the time. However, it is not good for mental toughness and brute strength. If you are only strong when your CNS is perfect, then do you not have real strength. Being strong when your CNS is rocked is a worthy goal.
I have been sporadic with my days off recently. When you train Monday through Friday and always take the weekends off, your body gets used to it. Thus, you will often find that you are weak on Friday as your body is transitioning into relaxation mode. Not letting your body know when your days off are may trick your body into super compensation when you do take a day off. Just a theory and one I am having fun with. Also, this one is not for beginners and is for advanced trainees only. I trained seven days in a row recently and took today off as I really needed it. Am I overtrained? Just a little bit and I am confident that I will be strong and ready to go tomorrow after relaxing today and letting my body and CNS recharge. I took two servings of Biotest's Powerdrive yesterday as a CNS recovery drink and took two today for good measure. I cannot wait to train tomorrow which of course is a great sign. I also took some extra capsules of "Vitalzym" as well and put some "Doctor's Testosterone Gel" on my shoulders. Finally, I rubbed on some DHEA cream before going to bed last night and will do the same tonight. I may have my Doc prescribe some DHEA lozenges to take before workouts. DHEA is great for adrenal health. Problem is most DHEA pills on the market have horrible absorption rates and more often convert to Estogen! the creams are a good option. It is also important to take DIM and Chryslin with DHEA to block the conversion to E. Finally, do not even think about taking it without getting some blood work done and consulting with an MD that knows his or her stuff.
I am on a high fat, high protein, and moderate carb diet right now. I am following Ori Hofmekler's recommendations in his outstanding "Anti Estrogenic Diet" I have been on it for around ten days and feel great. My waist is shrinking and my energy is off the chain!
I was also excited to hear about Ori's dairy protein powders. He told me that he gets his protein powder in California from cows that are treated well and fed organic grass. Just what I was looking for as I have been a vegan for man years for humane reasons not nutrition reasons. My blood type is 0 and all of the Docs that I know basically state that I need some animal protein for health reasons. Given that I come from an Indian heritage, some dairy is a good choice for me. I have a mild allergy to eggs so that is not a fit.
Editor's Update: Upon further research it has become apparent that the milk protein compromises my ethical beliefs and I have taken it out of my diet. More on this in the next issue.
For fat, I am talking in lots of coconut milk which is a great for mixing with protein powder. I am also taking Udo's choice Oil with non-fish DHA, Olive Oil, almonds, pecans, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and avocadoes. No rice, bread, or starches.
For dinner, I am eating a different bean with veggies and some pecans or walnuts for a complete protein. My stomach is a bottomless pit right now and I am eating two to three courses for dinner and then some. Regardless, the fat is coming off and my stomach is shrinking every week. I will be shredded and strong for my next DVD!
9. AGGRESSIVE STRENGTH NUTRITION ARTICLE
Getting Lean by Revving Up Your Metabolism
By Dr. John M Berardi, CSCS
I remember the day I got the bad news. I was 20 years old and I was in the middle of a nearly impossible squat session. Between sets, while trying to catch my breath, an “older” personal trainer (he was probably in his thirties) came over and offered some “advice”—unsolicited, of course.
“Ya know,” he said, “I used to look like you. But just you wait. After 25, the metabolism slows down, and it’s all downhill from there, buddy. You’d better enjoy it while it lasts.”
Then he turned and walked away.
I wasn’t sure what to make of this guy. After all, he didn’t look that great. Sure, he was a trainer and he did look better than most folks his age; but just barely. And he had a lot less muscle and a lot more fat than I did.
But the critical question was this - was he right? Did the metabolism come to a grinding halt after age 25? Was I doomed to lose my prized physique? Worse yet, was I destined to look like him? I had to find out. After all, if middle age spread was an inevitable consequence of aging, why bother?
So I asked around. I spoke with personal trainers, gym owners, and nutritionists, who all confirmed what I had heard. I spoke with some instructors at my local community college. They said the same, although with less certainty since at that time not much research had been done about the matter.
I looked around, studying the physiques of people I ran into at the gym, grocery store, mall, and elsewhere. The evidence was all around me. Younger people were leaner and seemingly in possession of faster metabolic rates than older individuals.
So, in my 20-year-old mind, the message seemed clear: I’d better make the most of my youthful body and metabolism because I was destined to lose it.
Fortunately, I was dead wrong!
Deceiving Father Time
Since that day, I’ve accomplished quite a bit in the exercise, nutrition, and fitness realm. In the late 90’s I won the NABBA Jr USA Bodybuilding Championships. I’ve also spent 10 years studying at University – eventually earning a PhD in Kinesiology with a specialization in the area of exercise and nutritional biochemistry. Finally, I’ve developed an exercise and nutrition consulting company called Science Link, with the mission of taking advanced exercise and nutrition research and translating it into meaningful, usable information for people who are not quite as sciency as I am.
Yet throughout, I’ve always come back to that question – is it inevitable – must we lost large amounts of muscle and gain large amounts of fats once we hit our late 20s? Well, I, for one haven’t suffered this fate. Firmly entrenched in my 30s, I’m just as active as ever and, interestingly, just as strong and just as lean as I was during my twenties. But my story aside, I’m also happy to report that the metabolism does not have to slow down with age – for any of us (assuming we’re healthy).
Yes, it’s true that when you’re young, your body finds a way to balance energy expenditure and energy intake. It’s true that, as you age, you’ll have a much more difficult time maintaining what you’ve got. It’s true that studies have shown that 1/3 of all North American adults are at least 20 percent over their “ideal weights.”
These truths, however, don’t seal your fate. Just because some folks spend their lives engaged in a frustrating battle of eating less only to gain more, that doesn’t mean you have to. I’ve skirted around those so-called truths. I eat just as much food—if not more—than I did in my twenties, yet I have no more body fat to show for it.
I’m no anomaly. Over the years, I’ve trained countless clients, ranging in age from 25 to 65. It didn’t matter how high their body fat percentages, how slow their metabolisms, or how scrawny their muscle mass when they met me—they were all able to turn things around – without drugs. Consider the following impressive stats:
- Robert, age 41: Lost 18 pounds of fat and gained 8 pounds of lean mass (lean mass is made up of muscle, bone, and other non-fat tissue) over 3 months
- Kenneth, age 31: Lost 27 pounds of fat and gained 2 pounds of lean mass over 6 months
- Lynn, age 57: Lost 24 pounds of fat and gained 8 pounds of lean mass over 7 months
- Danielle, age 32: Lost 14 pounds of fat and gained 17 pounds of lean mass over 5 months
- Ben, age 21: Lost 14 pounds of fat and gained 29 pounds of lean mass over 10 months
- Gail, age 26: Lost 9 pounds of fat and gained 6 pounds of lean mass over 2 months
- Jason, age 45: Lost 11 pounds of fat and gained 3 pounds of lean mass over 3 months
- Kelly, age 38: Lost 22 pounds of fat and gained 15 pounds of lean mass over 6 months
- Mike, age 26: Lost 12 pounds of fat and gained 11 pounds of lean mass over 2 months
- Rachel, age 24: Lost 23 pounds of fat and gained 3 pounds of lean mass over 7 months
- Vivian, age 38: Lost 15 pounds of fat and gained 8 pounds of lean mass over 5 months
- Amy, age 38: Lost 29 pounds of fat and gained 10 pounds of lean mass over 9 months
- Joseph, age 42: Lost 4 pounds of fat and gained 38 pounds of lean mass over 13 months
As you can see, it doesn’t matter how old people were when they decided to get serious and turn things around. Whether they were 25 or 45, their results were the same: They changed their body composition, replacing their flab with lean, metabolism boosting muscle. You’re never too old to boost your metabolism.
If that’s not enough to convince you that you have what it takes to rev up your metabolism, shed fat, and build muscle, then consider the research. When I was in my twenties, few scientists had tried to answer the questions that were nagging me. At that time, no one really knew for sure whether metabolism slowed down with age and, if it did, whether anything could be done about it. Now a group of applied scientists have looked at those questions and uncovered some surprising facts.
These scientists had noticed that the metabolism does seem to slow with age, but they refused to believe that there was nothing anyone could do about it. Today, as a result of their efforts, we’ve got plenty of evidence demonstrating that your metabolism slows with age only if you do nothing about it. If you eat properly, exercise, and take the right supplements, you can maintain your metabolic rate over your life span! Even if you’re 40 or older and things have already slowed down, you can reverse the trend and regain the metabolism of your youth. In fact, you can create a metabolism that’s even faster than the one of your twenties!
Is it easy? No. Does it take hard work and dedication? Yes. But it can be done. I’m living proof. So are my clients, and so are the thousands of people who have participated in hundreds of studies conducted in the United States and around the world.
Of Age and Metabolism
So why does maintaining a healthy weight get tougher as we age? Well, although most people eat less as they age—to compensate for moving less at their desk jobs—their activity levels generally decrease even more than their energy intakes, resulting in fat gain.
These decreasing activity levels result in yet another problem: muscle loss. Researchers have determined that, starting between the ages of 25 and 30, most people lose roughly 5 to 10 pounds of lean body mass during each decade of life. As muscle is a metabolically active tissue. That means that in addition to burning calories to move your skeleton through space, it also burns calories to maintain itself. So age-related muscle loss can cripple your metabolism. The average person who becomes less active and, consequently, loses muscle experiences a 20 to 25 percent reduction in 24-hour metabolism (measured as the amount of energy your body burns in 24 hours) by age 65. This adds up to a daily metabolic drop of more than 500 calories.
It’s tough to cut 500 calories off your daily menu to compensate for that metabolic drop, so most people end up packing on the fat.
Of course, this scenario holds true only if you do nothing to prevent it. Why do most people lose muscle as they age? Because they don’t use it. When it comes to the human body, what you don’t use, you lose, and muscle is no exception.
Studies of people older than age 60 show that you can—at any age—reverse muscle loss and regain the metabolism of your youth. In fact, according to research, individuals who—through exercise and smart eating—maintain their lean mass (muscle, bone, and other non-fat tissue) as they age experience only a 0.36 percent drop in metabolism per decade compared to the 5 to 7 percent per decade drop that most adults experience. Add a few key supplements to the mix and you can even prevent that 0.36 percent drop, and possibly even rev your metabolism higher than it was during your youth!
So metabolic slowdown is not inevitable. You can prevent it. And you can reverse it using a three-pronged approach including eating, exercising, and supplementing the right way to get a series of all-natural “metabolic advantages.”
With these metabolic advantages, you can expect to:
BUILD THE MUSCLE NEEDED TO SPEED UP YOUR RESTING METABOLISM ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT LONG.
A gain of 5 to 10 pounds of lean mass muscle will rev up your resting metabolism—the number of calories your body burns to maintain life—by roughly 100 calories – each and every day.
MAXIMIZE SOMETHING CALLED THE “AFTERBURN.”
Through targeted strength training and energy system training, you can increase the number of calories you burn during your workouts (about 300 to 600 calories per day depending on your body size and workout duration). However, assuming you integrate high intensity efforts, you can also blow through another 100 to 200 calories per day – a post-exercise energy burst that eats up calories even when you’re sitting on your butt.
INCREASE THE NUMBER OF CALORIES YOUR BODY BURNS AS IT DIGESTS FOODS.
Prioritizing metabolically costly proteins, metabolism-boosting fats, antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies, and the right carbs at the right times (nutrient timing), can boost your metabolic rate by another 100 to 200 calories per day.
ENCOURAGE YOUR BODY TO WASTE CALORIES.
The right combination of food choices and supplements can turn you in to a much less efficient calorie burner. Much like a car in need of a tune up, your body will consume more fuel than it needs to operate, wasting away the excess as heat. Unlike with your car, however, when it comes to your metabolism, inefficiency is a good thing. It will coax your body into burning more calories – and more fat – for fuel.
BOOST THE NUMBER OF CALORIES YOUR BODY BURNS THROUGH MOVEMENT.
Thanks to that desk job, family commitments, and great lineup of must-see TV, most of us move less at ages 30, 40, and beyond than we did during our teens and twenties. By training at least 5 hours each week, you can increase your calorie burning by about 300 to 600 calories per day.
All told, with the right combination of training, nutrition, and supplementation, you can expect to increase your daily calorie burn by between 40 and 60 percent within just 8 weeks. In other words, a guy who currently burns 2,500 calories a day would rev up his metabolism to a 3,400 to 4,000 daily calorie burn! That’s enough of a boost for you to see a 10-to-15-pound drop in body fat during those 8 weeks above. And for those at a beginner/intermediate level of training, you can expect muscle gain too.
Muscle gain and fat loss simultaneously? Yep, it happens all the time. Time to revisit my examples above.
Even more important, when you get these things right, you will simultaneously improve your health. In addition to speeding your metabolism, building muscle, and shedding fat, you can also expect to lower your blood cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. So not only can you live look better, you can live longer. So, in the end, I’m here to tell you that a large-scale metabolic decline isn’t inevitable as we age.
If you’re young and haven’t seen the affects of father time, that’s excellent. But that doesn’t mean you wont! Make sure that you use a combination of smart eating, training and supplementation to keep that metabolism reving for life.
And if you’re older and your current lifestyle has negatively impacted your body, know that it’s not too late. Turn things around now and you can reverse the damage that’s been done. I’ve seen it happen time and time again.
