1. Aggressive Strength Living Article Of The Week

It is as easy to deceive oneself and not be aware of it, as it is hard to deceive others without their being aware of it.

- François, Duc De La Rochefoucauld

I hate networking marketing companies aka multi-level marketing (MLM) or, more appropriately, pyramid schemes.  Amway is the most common network marketing company (Also disguised as quixtar which is a part of Amway), and the one by which probably everyone in the world has been pitched.  Now, what is it that I hate so much about network marketing?  Is it the products?  Some MLM companies actually sell decent products, albeit always overpriced and dependant upon aggressive distributors pressing those products on suffering friends and family members, this being the second-most irritating aspect of network marketing.  The number one most irritating aspect is the focus on "building" an organization.  Let's take a further look.

When you join a network marketing company you'll typically be signed up by someone referred to as your "sponsor".  Sometimes, this sponsor acts as a "mentor" and other times they're just a name and that's the end of it. You're better off with the latter, since the former sees you only through the dollar signs obstructing his eyes, hoping  you're a hard working and tenacious individual. Your "mentor" hopes to find as many hard-working people as possible to build up his organization.  Why?  Because the more work you do, the less work he does.

The first thing your sponsor will do is ask for a list of everyone you know.  Your sponsor will further ask you to call each person on your list, pitching the company's products and a business "opportunity".  And it gets better:  your mentor will sit in on each call with you, the better to perform a shameful tag-team, hard-sell to the unfortunate on the receiving end.  To illustrate this process, let's use a network marketing company selling weight-loss products...the pitch goes something like this:

YOU: I just started my own company and I've got some great weight loss products to tell you about!

(MLM people always refer to the company as "their" company, which is a losing combination of pathetic and hysterical.)

YOU: Do you know anyone who'd like to lose 10-30 pounds in thirty days?

(This is known as the indirect pitch.  Really, what you're telling your Aunt Millie is she's a fat ass who should buy some of these overpriced products.  Worse, you're actually hoping to get her not only buying product but making a list of her own prospects to call and pitch.  Down the road, you want these fat people distributing beneath you and repeating the same process with everyone they know.)

Your sponsor will tell you you're not "selling" your friends,  no, you‘re simply sharing your enthusiasm.  Most people hate selling and wouldn't ever want to do it for a living, much less huckster their friends and family.  For this reason, your network mentor must convince you that you're not a salesperson, you're simply a satisfied customer wanting to share your enthusiasm with others.  An analogy will be made to seeing a great movie and, naturally, telling all your friends and family about it.  Maybe you'd do that, but that's not analogous to calling the people you most care about and selling your lame product or--still lamer--business opportunity.   First, there's no profit in your friends going to see your enthused-about movie.  Once money enters the picture it's no longer innocent enthusiasm:  you now have an ulterior motive and if you think otherwise, you're in conflict with reality. Of course there is nothing wrong with selling products. It is trying to hide the fact that you are selling products that is irritating.

As lame as pitching your friends and family on over-priced and hyped-up products is, network marketing will press you on towards still darker territory.  Fact:  your network marketing goal isn‘t selling a lot of product.  No, your true goal is getting other people selling as much product as possible and, in turn, recruiting still others to do the same.  Network marketing is thus the ultimate pass-the-buck game.  Your sponsor recruits you so she won‘t have to work.  You, in turn, recruit others so you won‘t have to work.  Everyone keeps passing the buck along, hoping a hard worker eventually arrives so everyone else can take it easy.  Your ultimate goal is an organization full of hard working, hard-selling people making you tons of money.  While these people don't earn much individually, enough of them, selling a little bit each, adds up.  Why would anyone work so hard, for so little reward, in network marketing?  For this illusion:  that someday you'll become a millionaire like the top performers in the company.  Reality:  You‘re more likely to get struck by lightening (or receive an unlimited pass to the Playboy Mansion) than become a millionaire via network marketing.

Once you‘ve sold a few products as a network marketer, your sponsor will ask you to make another list of people to pitch.  This time, you'll pitch them on not on product, but on joining the business.  Any income story will do, thus if you made $25.00 selling product, that's the income story your sponsor will tell you to lead with.   It might go something like this:

YOU: Hey, I just started my own business and just today I made $25.00--do you know anyone who'd like to make an extra $500.00 to $1500.00 per month?  (Again, the indirect pitch--and also a number to which most people can relate.  If you ask someone if they know anyone who'd like to make an extra $50,000 a month, they'll think either

a)     You‘re dealing drugs, or

b)    the whole thing is a joke

Suggesting an extra $500.00 a month sounds more tangible and is therefore a stronger hook.)

Nevertheless, the response on the other end is sure to be hesitation and reluctance.  Since nobody wants anything to do with sales, your sponsor will tell you to use the same pitch she used on you:

YOU: It's not sales, it's customer service and sharing your enthusiasm.

All you have to do is use the products and share your excitement.  Sure, just get "excited" about products and then tell everyone...sounds like a plot from Fantasy Island.

Given network marketing's bad reputation, why would any company choose it as a distribution system?  The benefits are numerous. One, you needn't pay to advertise your products--all your distributors who pay to work for you do that.  Two, you'll acquire a sales force (of potentially thousands) who'll work without benefits.  No employee hassles and no paying out medical benefits.  Better than developing a high-quality, professional sales team, offer an illusory opportunity to as many people as possible and hope you'll get a few winners to stick around.  Even better, once you get your core distributors lined up, the process goes viral, meaning the distributors already installed do the work of recruiting more salespeople to peddle the products.

Another negative aspect of network marketing as a distribution system is the high percentage of profit paid out per sale.  When a distributor makes a sale, he gets a cut of the action--and several people above him get a cut of the action as well—so if the product isn't grievously overpriced, the company will fold in no time.  This is why networking marketing products are priced so much higher than comparable products sold through regular retail.  It's the ultimate middle man system with its hierarchy of mark-ups between seller and buyer.

Nor is recruiting friends and family the only way network markets bring in new people.  Another common practice is the opportunity meeting.  Those in the know refer to this as the deception meeting.  Here's how it works:  network marketing recruiters place ads in newspapers under the "Jobs" classification (rather than the business opportunity section).  The recruiters advertise network-marketing opportunities as "customer service" positions for which there is an hourly wage paid.  People calling to inquire about a job are invited to an interview.  Once they show up, they're directed to another room for a "group interview".  Once there, they're pitched on the "opportunity".  At the end of the meeting, they meet with the person who invited them in for the interview to hear more about the opportunity and discuss how much it will cost to begin working.  Ever heard of a job for which you pay a fee to start working?  Of course not, then again, network marketing isn‘t a job at all but a world of shady business opportunists.

Some will argue there's nothing wrong with network marketing and it's a great opportunity for supplemental, or even passive income. Then why the need for deception?  Why hard-sell your friends, even lying to get them to your opportunity meetings? The bottom line?  Few people are willing to join a pyramid scheme, so they must be misdirected.  Nobody is willing to do sales so you must deceive them into thinking something else is going on, something like "customer service" or "sharing enthusiasm".  The bottom line:  network marketing works only for people willing to wear blinders, i.e., people especially good at lying to themselves.

As lame as network marketing is, it‘s not as bad as it was.  Not long ago, distributors were forced to stockpile inventory, often thousands of dollars worth, in order to get reasonable wholesale prices and make their percentage off recruits, otherwise known as your down line. In fact, there's probably enough unsold networking marketing product piled high in garages near you to build a thousand Walmarts! Eventually, network marketing companies started getting sued and a new law was passed to protect consumers.  The law requires any network marketing company to purchase back unsold product from any distributor wanting to get out of the business.

I get pitched all the time by network marketers and, from what I can see, most network marketing companies no longer require distributors to stockpile inventory.  Most transactions these days take place on the Internet and orders are shipped directly from the parent company to the consumer.  That's a step in the right direction but the aim of network marketing remains the same:  not selling product personally but recruiting others to make those sales, and the products continue to be grossly overpriced and over-hyped.

There's nothing wrong with selling products you believe in and, obviously, I myself am in the business of selling fitness products.  However, I've never held deceptive meetings in order to sell products nor harassed any of my friends or family members.  I freely give high-quality information, demonstrating value and building customer trust.  My website is positioned to attract people who are interested in what I'm offering.  I have no need to talk to everyone I meet about what it is I do.  When I go to parties I neither pitch anyone nor do I have a business card (in fact, I don't believe in them).  I invite friends over to socialize, not to sell my DVDs and workshops.  There's a correct way of conducting business, effective both in the short and long run, and a wrong way of doing business, which may produce results short-term but guarantees long-term disaster.

Remember:  there are times when a network marketing pitch is useful.  For instance, if you have people hanging around that you want to get rid of, pitch them on a network marketing business--it's the surest way to clear a room or silence incoming phone calls.  Next time someone wants to borrow money or otherwise waste your time, tell them you have a great business opportunity you'd like to share with them and get ready for the dial tone.  In fact, next time a tele-marketer calls you, why not have some fun and pitch him on a network marketing business opportunity?  At the least, you'll never hear from them again.

SUN WARRIOR RICE PROTEIN

Sun Warrior Rice Protein

Finally a protein powder that is organic, tastes great,  and will not cause nausea and have you running to the bathroom with the runs!

It is not often that I get excited about protein powder. Most protein powders taste terrible and are loaded with unhealthy chemical ingredients. Sure I have used a few protein powders that are decent but none that actually motivated me to want to sell them on my website until recently. Not too long ago the guys at Sunwarrior were nice enough to send me a few bottles of their rice protein to test drive. Honestly I was expecting another bland terrible tasting rice protein like all of the other options that are on the marketplace. To my pleasant surprise I was actually shocked with how delicious the vanilla and chocolate flavors are. Unlike most protein powders both the vanilla and chocolate flavors taste great in water. This is the true test of a protein powder as you can make just about any protein powder taste great by mixing it with tons of fruits in a blender. However, if it tastes great in just water then you know you have a winner.

2.  Aggressive Strength Interview

The Benefits Of Strongman Training For Everyday people: An Interview With Strongman Competitor and Elite Strength Coach Mark Philippi

Most of you know who Mark Philippi is and even if the name does not ring a bell at first, if you have ever watched a strongman training competition on ESPN in the last seven years you have seen this strongman bad ass in action.

Mark has been a fixture on ESPN’s Worlds Strongest Man contest, competing for seven years, making the finals twice and finishing 7th in 1997 after winning the America’s Strongest Man title that year. Mark has traveled the world competing against the best strength athletes on almost every continent. Before competing on the professional strongman circuit, Mark was a National and World powerlifting champion (1996).

Mark is the President and Co-owner with his wife, Tracey, of Philippi Sports Institute Las Vegas, Nevada.  PSI is a 9000 ft training facility with a staff of performance coaches, physiotherapy personnel, and scientific consulting team who’s mission is to help athletes of all ages and sports achieve their goals in the areas of athletic performance, fitness, diet and conditioning.

In addition to being an incredible athlete, Mark unlike many athletes is an outstanding couch and instructor. Numerous world class athletes such as MLB Star Jason Giambi of the NY Yankees have traveled across the country to learn from Mark.  Here is what Jason had to say about working with Mark:

“I am a power hitter. I need to be strong.  Mark is an expert at developing strength and power. He had me ready for the season.”
Jason Giambi,  New York Yankees

How did you get into strongman competitions?

I had to try out at the World Muscle Power championships in Scotland-in 1997.  I had won P/L ing Nationals and World’s in the old ADFPA now USA Powerlifting in 1996.  I wanted to see how I would fare against the Strongest Men in the World.  I had a contact in Ed Coan.  He made a call to the individual who ran strongman across Europe at the time Doug Edmunds.  He invited me over for a 2-day competition against some of the best strongmen in the World at the time and I finished second in my first major competition.  From there I would receive many more invites to major competitions and ultimately would win America’s Strongest Man in 1997 and my first of seven invitations to World’s Strongest Man Show.

How can the average person benefit from strongman type training?

The average person can benefit due to the functionality of the event type training.  The events are mirror movements of everyday life.  Lifting, carrying gripping, dragging, and pushing movements happen on a daily basis.  Getting stronger in strongman events will help you with everyday tasks.

Can you describe briefly what your training philosophy is?

I believe that Strength and getting stronger is the key behind successful improvement in all athletics.  It comes first.  We must then learn how to functionally apply our improved strength to maximize our performance in our chosen field.

Which training system is the way to go for maximum strength and size, low volume training to failure or high volume training in which you avoid training to failure?

If you want to get really strong without getting bigger lift really heavy and rest a lot.  If you want to get bigger, shorten the rest periods to increase the time under tension during the workout.

What are some of the common mistakes that trainees make with regards to working out?

Poor technique on compound movements affecting their strength and progress.  They also don’t let their body recover enough between heavy training sessions.

Do you follow or recommend any specific nutrition program?

Nutrient timing principles- ie post workout shake of 70 % carbs, 30% protein, along with a higher protein diet consisting of at least one gram per pound bodyweight protein.

What nutrition supplements are worth taking if any

Your diet must first be solid.    I like post workout shakes from www.strengthpro.com. I like a creatine supplement called TRAC by MHP, Pure essential fatty acids 3’s 6’s &9’s. Secretagogue by MHP for growth hormone secretion, I also like a few products from Bodywise that help with performance and recovery (Supercell and their workout formula).  I only use products that I believe will help me.  Most do not.

What does your own workout look like right now?

I just finished a competition so I am lifting a little lighter and higher volume right now.  I am only doing a few events a year do to time/work commitments.  I am getting older so I have to rest a little more and pick and chose my heavy days when I feel mentally and physically capable of putting forth the effort required to improve my best training numbers.  When training for an contest I usually train 4 to 5 times a week.  Short workouts during the week focusing on one or two main areas of strength and a longer event training session on Saturday.  I am not as systematic at planning my training sessions, as I was earlier in my career and when I was powerlifting.

What kind of people are you working with now at your facility?

I work with all types of athletes.  Ages 10 to professional.  From all types of sporting events from football to skating to pistol shooting.  Anyone who wants to improve athleticism.

Is your training system for serious athletes only or can the everyday person benefit as well?

I have workouts for anyone who wants to improve themselves, both athletes and non-athletes.  You just need to be serious about getting better, whatever that is.   “You determine the effort God will determine the outcome”-??

I noticed that you have kettlebells at your facility. What do you and your athletes do with them and what is your take on kettlebells in general?

We use kettlebells as a tool in total program much like any other piece of equipment.  They provide variety.  Any time you change the equipment or movement you provide a new stimulus for the body to adapt. We primarily use them for hip extension type exercises.  Ie swings.  We use them a lot for conditioning, work capacity and in our fat burning programs.

Do you primarily use compound exercises for strength and size training or do isolation exercises have a place as well? Should trainees have a base with compound exercises first before adding in isolation exercises or should both be used early on?

We primarily train movements first and muscles secondarily.  You get the most bang for your buck with compound movements.  We are concerned about workout efficiency and we train a lot of athletes so we focus on movement patterns that take place in athletics.  Ie. (stealing terminology from others) Hip extension both single and double leg, hip and leg push both single and double leg, presses and variations, pull-ups/ chin-ups etc.  Our isolated movements, when we do them come towards the end of the workout.

4. Training Advice For The Entertainment Addict Generation

By Mike Mahler

Most of us under 40 are addicted to entertainment. The younger you are, the greater your need to be entertained at all times. That's why I call the kids who're 16 to 24 "Generation Entertainment" (or Gen Ent if you're into that whole brevity thing).

When we aren't watching four hours of TV every night, we're surfing the Web or sending idiotic text messages to our friends laced with infuriating acronyms. As a result, we're getting fatter and weaker. Even worse, we've lost any semblance of mental toughness. We have no concept of sacrifice.

Since we've screened out anything that isn't entertaining, few of us can slog through weeks and months of boring training. But the problem is even worse for Gen Ent. Unless training is fun and consistently stimulating, the dumbbells will gather dust long before any of it appears on the Game Cube.

Now, given everything I've just said, you'd think that I'd start this series with something sexy, like abs or biceps. Nope. I'm going to show you a better way to do the most boring type of exercise known to man.

Cardio: the remix

When you think of cardio, what comes to mind? Deconditioned schlubs trudging joylessly on treadmills? Overcaffeinated Spinning addicts cranking like madwomen on a bike going nowhere?

Cardio, the way most people do it, is a severe form of mental-toughness training. But I don't mean that in a good way. It takes a lot of mental toughness to do that kind of cardio training five times a week for months on end. But it doesn't do much for your body. Unless you're born with good genetics for endurance training, it's probably not going to make you much leaner than you are now.

Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives that are both fun and effective. They produce fast results with no boredom required. And best of all, they're cheaper than basic cable.

5. Don’t Wait Till New Year’s Program

By Josh Henkin

I hate excuses, they are always reasons people are putting off doing things that could change their lives. Why put off making a million dollars tomorrow, when you can do it today? That is exactly why 1% of the population makes 90% of the money! The same could be said for getting lean and scary strong! Sure, a lot of people talk a big game, but few actually take action to completely change their physical appearance and abilities.

A classic excuse is people waiting for a holiday, a weekend, or a birthday to pass to start getting serious. That is bogus and the most obvious sign of an excuse maker. This workout is simply for those that want to start making changes tomorrow and are tired of waiting till Monday to get going.

This is simple, but not easy, three implements; sandbags, kettlebells, and a jungle gym are all that are needed. You can train this at home, your gym, or outside, whatever works. This is the same program I have been using for years to get my clients progress and when you follow it, it works. Lifeline USA Kettlebells

The marketplace is finally ready for a high quality kettlebell at a great price. I have no doubt that you will love these kettlebells and you cannot beat the price! Here is what people are saying about these high quality bells:

"Mike, I received the Lifeline KBs(2 79s and a 97) today, and did some snatches, Turkish get ups, and presses. It felt good to be able to press the 97. The handles have a nice gritty feel--I believe I like them a little better than the original Dragon Doors, definitely better than the newer, slicker Dragon Doors. Thanks again for your ideas. I'm looking forward to your new DVD."
- Brian DeLong, Harrisburg, PA

Lifeline Kettlebell FAQ

Q: I have one Dragondoor bell, can I use a Lifeline USA bell with the DD one for double work?

A: Yes it should not be a problem at all. While the LL bells have slightly thicker handles, the bell is pretty much the same size and will not be an issue.

Q: Can the smaller ladies bells be used for Renegade Row?

A: While the smaller bells look like real kettlebells (no plastic thin handles) I do not recommend anything below 35lbs for Renegade Row. It becomes too much of a stability issue with very light bells.

Q: Do the handles have the slick smooth epoxy coating that DD bells have?

A: Nope, I made a point of having LL avoid the slick handles. They are smooth enough that they will not tear up your hands and rough enough that they will not fly out of your hands on high repetition work.

Q: How big is the 97lb bell?

A: Around the same size as DD's 88lb bell. I love the 97s for double work!

Q: How is the quality?

A: I am very happy with the quality. The bells went though strict quality control measures and passed with flying colors. I could put my reputation behind any bell on the market and chose to do so with the LL bells. I have been training with them for a month and love them. I know you will as well.

Holosync Meditation CDs

Meditation is one of the best things you can do to relax your mind and handle stress more effectively. High stress equals low DHEA, testosterone, and GH levels. You must get a handle on stress to be at your best. My online client Les Larson told me about this program and after only a few weeks I am hooked.

Just listen to the program for 30-60 minutes per day and you will notice a difference after a few days. After a week you will look forward to each session. I like to use it after working out or before going to bed. Check it out at:

Stabilized rice bran and germ is an exceptional nutrient-rich functional food with naturally occurring broad nutrient profile of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fiber, antioxidants and phytosterols. By virtue of its nutritional composition, stabilized rice bran and germ has shown to possess blood sugar lowering and blood cholesterol lowering properties. Warrior Vitamin C

Naturally occurring Vitamin C from Amla berries.

Vitamin C is essential to the human body. Unlike other animals, humans can’t produce vitamin C and therefore must ingest it from an outside source. Vitamin C plays critical roles as an antioxidant and a cofactor in hormonal and immuno functions. It is an antihistamine and an anti-inflammatory agent. It also helps in lowering the overall metabolic stress on the body. Vitamin C is highly concentrated in the adrenal gland, which may bear proof to its biological role in enhancing adrenal functions and resistance to stress. The vast majority of vitamin C products today aren’t natural.  The human body hasn’t been adapted to fully utilize synthetic vitamins including vitamin C, therefore synthetic vitamins have a lower biological value than naturally occurring vitamins.  Amla C is about 200 times more potent than synthetic vitamin C.  It is also a most viable source of other important cofactors including bioflavonoids and ellagic acid (a most notable anti-cancerous compound).

Warrior Vitamin C contains only naturally occurring vitamin C. No ascorbic acid or other synthetic substances added. Specially designed to fulfill the body’s demand for vitamin C to promote antioxidant activity and support the body’s metabolic integrity.

Made With: Fresh amla berries (amla C), cultivated without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Amla berries contain the highest known naturally occurring vitamin C of any edible fruit in the world. Warrior Vitamin C is naturally pH balanced.

Recommended Use: Take 2 tablets or more daily before meals. In special cases involving an increased metabolic stress or intense physical stress, take 8 – 16 tabs per day in divided doses, preferably on an empty stomach.

Benefits:

  • Most bioactive antioxidant
  • Promotes healing of the digestive tract
  • Contains all bioactive cofactors including bioflavonoids and alagic acid
  • Supports liver detox and resistance to stress
