Avoid Training Plateaus With "Undulating Periodization"

Recently I read a fascinating article by top strength coach and Men's Fitness contributor Alwyn Cosgrove called "Undulating Periodization." Alwyn reveals his twist on periodization in which he applies a variable rep system. As a result, you do not repeat the same workout for over ten days. Also by changing the reps constantly you will not need to start a new training protocol for nearly ten weeks.

Lets use the example of the Military Press to illustrate how it works. Lets say that you are doing the Military Press on Monday and Thursday. On workout one and four, do five sets of five with ninety-second breaks. On workout two and five do three sets of fifteen with thirty-second breaks, and on workout three and six, do four sets of ten with one-minute breaks. By keeping the exercise the same you get a chance to improve technique and get into a groove. In addition, by changing the rep scheme constantly your body takes much longer to adapt and you make progress for longer periods of time.
