1. AGGRESSIVE STRENGTH QUOTE OF THE WEEK

I read this quote in an article by Senator McCain while waiting for my brother in the hospital waiting room yesterday. A few months ago he had a terrible paragliding accident that really messed up his right leg. Two bones were broken completely and the injury was so severe that many doctors told him that amputation was a possibility. It was a big blow to him and while he was depressed at times, I was impressed with how well he handled the situation. He still kept his sense of humor and with some help from my client Kevin Keating; we managed to find the best doctor in the area to fix up the leg. To make a long story short, he will be keeping his leg and is recovering rapidly. This entire incident for my brother Roger was a chance to show him what he is made of. Was he scared at times? You bet he was. Who would not be after crashing into a mountain, and having your bone sticking out while you waited for help to come. Moreover, hearing that you might lose your leg will make anyone scared. Being scared does not mean that you are a coward. It is what you do with that fear that determines that. Remember next time a storm hits you that fear is okay, just focus on what you do with that fear. Will you look back and be proud of how you handled the situation or ashamed?

2. AGGRESSIVE STRENGTH TRAINING ARTICLE

Knock out that weak link with GTG

One of the best methods that I know of to break through a plateau or improve an exercise is GTG (greasing the groove). With GTG, you pick an exercise that you want to rapidly improve and do several sets a day everyday. You do not do all of the sets in regular set fashion. Do one set in the morning, one in the afternoon, one in the evening etc. Here is a sample GTG program that I recently did to improve my double kettlebell military press:

Now on each week, five total sets was the minimum that I did each day. On some days, I did 8-9 sets. I took one day off per week. I am still using this GTG program for presses and getting stronger every week. Do not train to failure on any of the sets, but get close to it after a few weeks. In other words, your sets in week four and on should be challenging. You should never miss a rep, but feel free to ramp up the intensity so that by week five you are training one rep short of failure. When you are training one rep short of failure, stay at that rep range for two weeks before increasing the reps again. This GTG program can be applied to any exercise.
