1. AGGRESSIVE STRENGTH QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I will not insult anybody with a “write down your goals” pitch. If it works for you, great, but if you need to be reminded of what your goal is, it is really not your goal. I strongly advise a competition on a specific date to really focus your efforts.”
- Jack Reape
I am a big believer in goal setting and knowing the target. However, this quote by Jack Reape is great. The truth is that you should not have to write down your goals. It should be in your head at all times. The second you wake up in the morning it should come to you. In the context of strength training, you should know what you are going after at all times and not require a piece of paper to remind you. If you cannot even remember what your goals are, then you are not taking the attainment of your goals very seriously.
January is coming up and soon it will be time for another day of new years resolutions and goal setting. However, you should know what your goals are right now. January should be just another month in which you go after your goals rather than a month in which you write down some things that you think you want, but do not really want to do. Do not do what others think you should do. For example, someone might say to him or herself: “I am thirty-five and should be married with kids now.” That is fine if that is what you really want. However, I feel that many people do things just to fit in or gain acceptance from their peers or people that they do not even know. Have a backbone strong enough to support you on the paths that you want to take and for the goals that you want to achieve. Happy Holidays to you and your family!

Variety May Be The Spice Of Life, But Could Ruin Your Training Progress
People always tell me that they like to switch things up every workout because they get bored easily. These people always have the same things in common: average strength and at best and average physique. If you are just trying to stay in shape and have fun when training, then it is fine to switch things up constantly. However, if you want to get really good at something, then you have to focus on that. For example, one of my recent goals that I achieved was to Military Press two 88lb kettlebells five times. To get there, I did not do a variety of other pressing exercises such as: bench presses, handstand pushups, band presses etc. I focused almost exclusively on double kettlebell Military Presses. By practicing the exercise over and over again, I learned how to make it more efficient and hit my goal. If I kept rotating it with something else, I would have made minimal progress.
To many people, it may be boring to do the same thing often. However, I think that lack of progress is more boring. If you are constantly changing things around then you do not have a way to measure progress. You have to stick with something for a while to make some progress. Yes, I believe in making program modifications every three to four weeks. However, this does not mean that I would do something like a powerlifting routine for four weeks and then bodyweight only for four weeks, then do kettlebell training only for four weeks, and then expect to go back to powerlifting and be stronger. That is just not going to happen. Make a few modifications in reps, intensity, and volume rather than dramatic changes that will through your focus off.
Pick a few exercises that you want to improve and use them as meters for progress. Keep your workouts focused and don’t give up when you get bored. People only get bored due to lack of progress. Would you quite a job every four weeks and start another one that is completely different? Not likely.
