1. AGGRESSIVE STRENGTH QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“If you read twelve books you will be twelve times smarter than just reading one. You will also understand the one book better from reading the other twelve.”
- Louie Simmons
I heard this great line from top powerlifting coach Louie Simmons on a radio interview this week. It is a great line and delineates how I feel about knowledge. Many people make the mistake of thinking that learning stops after you finish school. I remember many of my friends in college stating that they could not wait to graduate so that they could avoid ever reading a book again.
Learning should never stop at a certain age or stage in life. The fact that only 1% of the U.S. population has a library card shows clearly that we take the acquisition of knowledge for granted. If you want to become exceptional at anything, you have to continue to be a student. The best teachers are the one’s that still have the mindset of a student. When you feel like you know everything then you reveal clearly that you really know nothing. There is always more that you can absorb.

Exercising While Sick Can Be Beneficial
Many years ago a trainer told me that you should never train while sick. He told me that if you are not excited about your workouts, then you should skip that day and wait until you are. The problem was that this guy was at least thirty pounds overweight. I guess he was still waiting to feel perfect before getting a workout.
The bottom line is that if you wait for everything to be perfect before getting a workout, you are not going to get too many workouts in. Life just does not work that way for most people. You have to be willing to workout when you do not feel optimal and according to top strength coach Bill Starr, it is beneficial to workout while you are sick. Bill states that exercise helps “flush useful healing nutrients through the body and aides in expelling toxins.” Moreover, Bill explains that when you get sick your immune system releases antibodies to fight off toxins. These antibodies increase strength especially during the early stages of illness. Thus, not only is it beneficial to workout while sick, you may find that you are actually stronger when sick. While it is hard to believe, I can think of my instances in the past when I worked out while sick and had some great workouts.
Now I do not recommend that you do your regular full-blown workouts when you have a fever. But doing 50-60% of what you normally do is a good idea. Just focus on some basic exercises and go through the motions. Being proactive while being sick will give you a sense of control and make you feel more empowered then sitting in bed all day watching TV and breathing dirty air. Get outside, get some fresh air and do some training to get better faster.
