Have you ever wondered how some people are full of energy every day while others have to hit Starbuck several times just to make it through the day? Here is one of the secrets. People that love what they do are naturally energetic. People that do not like what they do have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning. Don’t believe it is that simple? Well, lets use an example that many people can relate to. Remember when you were a kid and had school the next day. If you hated school like me, you were never energetic the next morning before school. However, think about the night before Christmas or before some other exciting day. I remember barely getting two hours of sleep but being very energetic the next day.

Now you could say that adults are different than kids and that they can get by with less sleep. I do not believe that, but lets talk about adults. When I was working in the Internet world as a Director Of Business Development many years ago, I was energetic about going to work when I first started. It was an exciting opportunity for me and I went to work each day ready to go. After two months the job became very mundane and my energy plummeted. I found myself drinking coffee like everyone else in the morning and having another cup in the afternoon to get to the end of the day. Was it because my job was so demanding that I needed all of the caffeine? No, it was because I did not enjoy it.

For the last three years I have been a strength coach and love what I do. Energy is rarely ever a problem. I love what I do now and wake up energetic regardless of how much sleep I get. Now I do not believe that people can get by with four hours of sleep forever. At some point you will burn out. However, if you like what you do you will be more energetic with less sleep then you would be with all of the sleep in the world doing a job that you hate.

2. AGGRESSIVE STRENGTH TRAINING ARTICLE

This week’s tip comes from legendary powerlifting coach Louie Simmons. I have been a big fan of Louie’s work for many years and I am honored to have him contributing a tip this week. Louie is in charge of the most successful powerlifting club in the world. His club has produced more powerlifting champions than any other. The numbers that the men and women produce who work with Louie are astonishing. I asked Louie for some tips on how to increase the overhead press and here is what he had to say:

  1. Do the seated press with dumbbells. Choose three weights for example 100 lbs, 75 lbs, and 50 lbs. Work on setting a repetition record with one dumbbell weight. the reps should range from 10 to 25 reps.
  2. Do dumbbell extensions or barbell extensions for special work along with rear, side and front raises.
  3. Do barbell pressing in the following manner. Ten sets of three reps in a three- week wave. 70% the 1st week 75% the second week and 80% the third week. Pendulum back to 70% and start over. Second day 72 hours later do max effort work.
  4. Use chains on the bar or JUMPSTRETCH bands to accommodate resistance. (Editor’s note: Usually as the bar gets close to lockout you will naturally slow the bar down. The bands keep the resistance on all the way to the end).
  5. Work up to new PR in the incline press.
  6. Do rack lockout work on the high pin where 10%-15% highest weight can be done.
