Complicated plans seem to be in vogue these days. Many people believe that a plan will not work unless it is complicated. Moreover, people are often proud of themselves when they can comprehend complicated plans even if the plans are worthless in application. These people fail to realize that there is not a correlation between complicated plans and success.
This travesty is omnipresent across the board. It has permeated just about every facet of society and industry. Many strength trainees laugh at simple straightforward programs and are baffled when these so called inferior programs produce substantial results. The business world is no different. When many people start their own business, they often spend thousands of dollars on unnecessary accessories and forget the most important ingredient of any business. What is this magic ingredient? Customers! Yes as hard as it is to believe, having the latest fax machines, computer software, state of the art office furniture, and accounting services are not the keys to success in business, but having clients certainly is.
The more complicated a plan is, the less likely you are to see it through to fruition. Most complicated plans are destined to fail. That is just the nature of the beast. Working smart and working hard are the twin brothers of success and working smart requires straight- forward simple plans that do not require a thousand steps to execute.
The next time you try a workout regimen, a marketing plan, or even plan your next vacation look for the path of least complication. Working twice as hard to get the same results is not acceptable and while the ends may justify the means, why waste unnecessary time and effort on flawed means?

2. AGGRESSIVE STRENGTH TRAINING ARTICLE
Even if you do not want to practice training cycling you will end up practicing training cycling.
I find it amusing that different training camps that are opposed adamantly are often in agreement without realizing it. One perfect example is the concept of training cycling. People in the periodization camp believe that you must incorporate back off weeks. For example, training hard for three weeks and then having a moderate fourth week. On the other hand, members of the high intensity camp believe in the philosophy of go heavy or go home. The problem is that you will eventually hit a wall with the high intensity phase and will be forced to use lighter weights due to the decreases in strength that will inevitably occur. As top powerlifting coach Louie Simmons once said, once you hit a max you can only go down.
The difference between the training cycling camp and the high intensity camp, is that the training cycling camp is proactive while the high intensity camp is reactive. In other words, in the cycling camp, the trainee decides when he or she will go light. In the high intensity camp, the bully of over-training decides when the trainee will use lighter weights. Similar ends on paper, but much different results as the members of the cycling camp are the strongest men and women in the world.
Do yourself a favor and have back off weeks or back off workouts. Here are two options. Option one: train hard for three weeks, and then use 70% of your training volume and intensity in week four. Option two: train hard for two workouts per week and then do two moderate workouts per week. For example, using a four-day training week, on Monday and Thursday do two heavy full body workouts and on Tuesday and Friday do two moderate intensity workouts. Every six weeks, do a back off week.
Just remember whether you plan for back off weeks or not, you will be taking back off weeks. Just ask yourself if you want to be proactive or reactive.
